An algorithm implemented in MATLAB combining particle swarm optimization (PSO) andthephasefield(PF)approachtofracturebasedonthefiniteelementmethodishereinproposedto address the fundamental issue of model parameters’ identification for phase-field fracture mechanics simulations. This work sheds further light on the role of the internal length scale parameter l , and c the proposed robust PSO-PF formulation has been applied to a series of uni-axial tensile tests of ABS material with E and l to be identified, and to three-point bending tests with E, G and also l to c c c be identified. Results show that the optimal values of E and Gc are consistent in both tests. At the same time, l presents a significant dependency upon the test type and, therefore, it should always be c identified separately from uni-axial tests.
