Abstract

Thispaperpresentsadiscrete element model dedicated to model the behavior of reinforced con- crete structures. Starting for a standard discrete model, a strategy is proposed to take into account the reinforce- mentbars into the material, while keeping the initial numerical efficiency and robustness of the discrete model: no degrees of freedom are added in the numerical problem and the efficient “elastic prediction algorithm” can still be applied when linear behavior is considered for the rebars. Rebars meshing is obtained by rearranging the location of the particle nuclei around the bars, and an additional model parameter is introduced for accounting the behavior of the steel-concrete interface. The capabilities of the proposed approach is illustrated by several comparisons with experimental results, either in 2D or 3D.
