Abstract

This experimental investigation focuses on the maximum loads of notched concrete beams un- der four-point bending and the corresponding failure modes. The fracture process involving multiple cracks is also analyzed using the extended fictitious crack model. It is clearly demonstrated that the change of cracking behavior and failure mode may lead to a significant reduction in the load-carrying capacity of the simple beam. The mechanism of the phenomenon is explained, and its engineering implication is discussed.
