Abstract

The behavior of deep beams is significantly different from shallow beams, the reinforced concrete plane section does not remain plane after deformation. The utilization of fiber reinforced polymer, (FRP) and self-compacted concrete in the construction fields has received a special attention world wide during the last decade. An experimental program was carried out to investigate the fracture behavior and failure analysis of self compacted concrete deep beams reinforced by CFRP or steel bars. The experimental program consists of five self-compacting reinforced concrete deep beam models that have a constant cross section of 100 mm×500 mm and of a total length 1200 mm. These models were classified into two groups. The first group contains two control beams without opening. The second group contains three beams with opening. The cracking, failure loads, deflections and rotations at different loading stages as well as the crack patterns and modes of failure for the tested beams were observed, recorded and discussed. The results showed that the flexural cracks in deep beams are not critical except in the case where tensile reinforcement ratio is less than the minimum suggested by the codes.
