The aim of the paper is to present experimental and theoretical study of fracture of brittle rock- like materials. To this end the tests of the specimens of brick and mortar subjected to various combinations of the tri-axial state of stress components were performed. The experiments made it possible to construct for both material tested the limit surfaces at material failure. The data obtained for brick and mortar subjected to uni-axial compression were used to calibrate the own theoretical model capable to describe the mechanical behavior of brittle materials. The limit surfaces obtained experimentally were compared with the theoretical predictions based on the fracture criterion proposed.
