Abstract

This paper addresses a fundamental problem that is at the root the applicability of fracture mechanics to concrete. On the basis of theoretical considerations, it quantifies the error introduced by a simple LEFM analysis vis a vis of a more comprehensive (albeit complex) NLFM one. The error is expressed in terms of peak load, which is the primary metric of practical interest to engineers.
