Abstract

A modelling in which the crack is incorporated in the shape functions of the finite element formulation is used in this paper. The crack is represent- ed by a discontinuous function of the displacement gradients, which acts as an additional localized mode with a length scale parameter that is indepen- dent of the element size. A predefinition of the direction of the crack is not necessary and the failure zone can be described with a relatively small number of finite elements. This embedded crack/discontinuity model is compared with the widely used fracture energy model.
