Abstract

splitting capacity of concrete cylinders subjected to an inner pressure are investigated experimentally, theoretically and numerically. Three types of concrete are tested: Normal, high and very high strength concrete, (NSC, and VHSC with a compressive strength of 57, and 157 re- spectively). Reference cylinders with no confining spiral reinforcement are compared to cylinders including a spiral. Two analytical models based on non linear fracture mechanics (NLFM) are evaluated. A good correspond- ence is observed. Finite element (FE) analysis are successfully performed based on the discrete crack, the smeared crack and the inner softening band (ISB) concepts. The fracturing behaviour of a cylinder is very adequately captured specially by the ISB approach.
